Topic: Subject: Folder/Category system for organizing sheets

Hello everyone,

I'd like to discuss a feature idea for organizing sheets in larger projects.

Current situation: In big projects with many sheets, the list becomes long and hard to navigate. All sheets are shown in a flat list.

Proposed feature:

Create folders/categories to group sheets (e.g., "General", "Power", "Control")
Organize sheets in a tree structure in the left panel
Move sheets between folders via drag & drop or right-click menu
Each sheet gets a "category" attribute in the .qet file
Table of contents can show which category a sheet belongs to
Additional ideas:

Folders can have default properties (titleblock, border) for new sheets created inside
When creating new sheets (via menu, right-click, or from table of contents), they go into the selected folder
Copy/paste sheets between different folders
Backward compatible: old files without categories still work
Questions for discussion:

Is this something the project wants/needs?
Any suggestions for the implementation approach?
Should categories be visible in the tab bar (e.g., "Power\Sheet 1")?
Looking forward to your feedback!

Re: Subject: Folder/Category system for organizing sheets

Doesn't anyone see the value in this feature? Personally, I think it would be great. But there's no point if I put a ton of work into it and it doesn't end up being included in the program.

Even a “no” would be helpful—then I can look into the next feature.

Maybe we're misunderstanding each other right now.
I mean something like what's shown in the picture—a tree structure that you can expand and collapse.

Re: Subject: Folder/Category system for organizing sheets

Hallo Kellermorph,

Hello Kellermorph,
I think it’s a good idea.
The lack of options for structuring projects in QElectrotech makes drawing modern
circuit diagrams relatively difficult or even impossible.

A tree structure like the one in your image is certainly a good start.
What rules do you intend to use to build such a structure?
Structuring by categories like "General," "Power Section," and "Control"—as you
mentioned in your first post—is certainly feasible. Structuring according to current
standards (EN 81436, EN 61355) should also be possible.
The most important thing will be ensuring that project information (e.g., system identifiers,
location codes) remains synchronized with the schematic pages, the title block,
and the objects within the schematic itself.
I don't have a clear idea of how to implement something like this either, but if you
share your progress regularly, perhaps we can work together to arrive at a solution.

Re: Subject: Folder/Category system for organizing sheets

My idea was that you could do this with up to two levels, as shown in the image. That said, even one level would be enough for me and would already be extremely helpful. Users should also be able to freely name the groups and, if needed, have those names displayed in the table of contents.
Of course, care must be taken to ensure that, for example, when a new bill of materials is created, it remains in the group in which it was created.

I used both, german and english!
