Summary0000344: Incorrect and inconsistent behavior of conductor texts (Conductor Text / Text Formula)
DescriptionConductor texts (Conductor Text / Text Formula) behave inconsistently and unpredictably under certain editing conditions. Two separate issues have been observed: unwanted movement of conductor text after editing a junction, and conductor text disappearing completely when used with references.

1) Conductor text changes position after editing a junction
When modifying an existing conductor — for example by adding a branch or adjusting its geometry — the text assigned to the original conductor unexpectedly moves to the new junction or to another segment of the conductor.

Expected behavior:
The conductor text should remain exactly where the user placed it unless the user explicitly moves it.

Actual behavior:
The conductor text relocates automatically after editing the conductor’s geometry.

2) Conductor text disappears when using references
When a conductor contains a reference (e.g., cross‑reference or link), the conductor text sometimes disappears completely.
Once it disappears, it cannot be restored by any action:
  • changing conductor properties
  • toggling Text Formula
  • moving the text
  • saving and reopening the project
  • switching between Qt5/Qt6 builds
The text still exists in the conductor object, but it is not rendered.

Expected behavior:
Conductor text should always be displayed if it is defined.

Actual behavior:
Conductor text occasionally becomes invisible and cannot be forced to reappear.

My configuration (important for reproduction)
  • I do not use automatic conductor texts.
  • I only assign text manually where needed, mostly on conductors containing references.
  • “Show one text per folio potential” is disabled.
  • Therefore, each conductor text should behave as an independent object and should not be automatically moved or hidden.
Steps To ReproduceSteps to reproduce
  1. Create a conductor and manually assign a conductor text.
  2. Edit the conductor (add a branch, change geometry).
  3. Observe that the conductor text may move to the new junction.
  4. Create a conductor with a reference.
  5. Continue editing the schematic, saving, reopening, etc.
  6. In some cases, the conductor text disappears and cannot be restored.
Additional InformationAdditional notes
  • The issue occurs repeatedly but not always in the same way.
  • It may be related to recalculation of text position after geometry changes.
  • It may also be related to reference updates or redraw logic.
  • The problem affects manually assigned conductor texts, not automatic ones.

Thanks for the detailed report. Both symptoms come from the "Show one text per folio potential" option. When it is on, QElectroTech shows only one text for each group of connected wires, on the longest wire, and hides the others. When you add a branch, the text moves to whichever wire is now the longest.

The setting that counts is the one in Folio > Properties, and each folio has its own. Turning it off in Project > Properties only affects folios you create afterwards. Projects started from the examples have it on.

Workaround: untick it in Folio > Properties on each folio, then save and reopen the project. Until the fix below is in a nightly build, the hidden texts only reappear after reopening.

Fix for the reopen step: https://github.com/qelectrotech/qelectrotech-source-mirror/pull/1191

Question for you: should changing it in Project > Properties also update the folios that already exist?

The fix is now in QElectroTech (merged on 1 October), so development builds made since then have it. Turning "one text per potential" on or off in Folio > Properties now changes the drawing as soon as you press OK, so you no longer need to reopen the project.

Could you try a current development build and say whether the texts still vanish or jump? My earlier question still stands: should Project > Properties also update the folios that already exist?

Thanks for the quick response — I tried the procedure you described, and indeed, simply closing and reopening the project is enough for the conductor‑text settings to apply correctly.

Unfortunately, this doesn’t solve the issue I’m seeing on one particular folio: sometimes a conductor ends up with no text displayed at all, even though the text is defined. I haven’t found any way to force it to appear. I am attaching a screenshot of the Properties dialog of the problematic conductor.

Regarding your question “should changing it in Project > Properties also update the folios that already exist?” — in my opinion it should not modify existing folios. The settings in the Project Properties dialog are located under “New folio”, so it wouldn’t make sense for them to retroactively change folios that are already created. Existing folios would need to have the new settings applied explicitly.

Thanks, the screenshot explains it. Two things are hiding that text:

1. The ticked-off box next to Text is that wire's own "show text" setting. It is saved in the file, so the text stays hidden until it is ticked.
2. The box is greyed out because "one text per potential" is still on for that folio. QElectroTech only locks the box in that case.

Fix: Folio > Properties on that folio > untick "one text per potential" > OK, save and reopen. The box is then enabled; tick it.

Agreed on Project > Properties: it stays as it is, for new folios only.

If the box is still greyed out after that, could you attach the project file (or that one folio)? I'd also like to see how the box got unticked in the first place.

Fix for the greyed-out box: https://github.com/qelectrotech/qelectrotech-source-mirror/pull/1237

When the "show text" box is locked, hovering over it now says it is locked by the folio's "one text per potential" option and that you change it in Folio properties. It does not change which texts are shown.

The new text is French until the translations are updated.

I'd still like the project file if the text doesn't come back after the steps in my last note.

The fix worked — on the folio where the conductor text was missing, I disabled “one text per potential”, and after that the checkbox in the conductor’s properties became available. Once I ticked it, the text appeared immediately.

There was no need to save the project, close it, or reopen it.

Thanks.
